Transplant Coordinator at medical non-profit organization | in-person role

Our client, a medical nonprofit is looking for a Transplant Coordinator to assist in facilitating organ and tissue donations in the greater NYC area.

This role is responsible for facilitating organ and tissue donation opportunities by providing clinical and family support. Ensures prompt, professional, and effective service to donor hospitals in the region to enhance clinical partnerships. Advocate for the safe recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation. Promotes awareness and education to increasing organ and tissue donation. Supports and fosters the mission, vision and core values of the org and its commitment to organ and tissue donation.

We are assisting the org in searching for and screening possible candidates for this role. If selected, you would be a direct hire employee of the organization.

Job Description:

-Travels to donor hospital upon receipt of assignment; arrival to hospital at start of shift or within two hours of reassignment considering travel conditions. Is assessable during all scheduled on-call hours and responds to all notifications within 15 minutes. Notifies Administrator on Call (AOC) if delayed.

-Evaluates potential organ donors at referring hospitals to determine medical suitability for organ and/or tissue donation through medical record review. Completes physical assessment. Completes the donor evaluation via electronic donor record (EDR); reports this information to the AOC and/or Referral Coordinator (RC).

-Communicates with physicians and other health care team members to obtain information about the patient’s hospital course and family’s understanding of the patient’s condition.

-Consults and collaborates with AOC, medical director, transplant teams, and donor hospital staff to provide optimal medical management of potential donors and to maximize organ suitability. Performs donor management independently.

-Provides timely feedback about the referral and hospital plan to the AOC and/or RC.

-Works with health care team members to ensure that each family is offered the opportunity of organ and tissue donation at the appropriate time and in a compassionate and respectful manner; provides information and approaches families about the donation process so that the family can make an informed decision in support of donation.

-Collaborates with Donor Center Coordinator and/or Transplant Center designee to provide appropriate medical information about each potential donor’s organ function to personnel at designated transplant centers according to the UNOS match run list.

-Allocates organs following UNOS and LiveOnNY organ allocation policies.

-Manages the safe recovery of organs and tissues in the operating room per UNOS and LiveOnNY policies for both brain death and donation after circulatory death cases.

-Completes documentation and quality assurance for assigned cases per policy in a timely manner.

-Ability to function as a Referral Coordinator.

-Participates in formal and informal inservice training and educational programs with hospital personnel to create awareness and to facilitate the donor process; assists with review and revision of policies and procedures.

-Maintains skill level through mandatory training, annual evaluations, and continuing education certification requirements.

-Maintains annual competencies.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

-Licensed NYS RN with minimum one-year experience in critical care or trauma/ emergency setting

-Certified Paramedic with two years organ procurement experience or CPTC certification (Preferred) or minimum of two years previous progressive clinical OPO experience may be substituted

-Current certification in CPR, ACLS and BLS preferred.

-Must possess excellent critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills as well as as high level of maturity, stamina and self-motivation.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

-Ability to read, analyze, and interpret healthcare periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations

-Ability to prepare documents, write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals

-Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from families, groups of healthcare professionals, and the general public

-Fluency in a second language preferred

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

-Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference

-Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations;

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables;

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of and ability to function in a hospital operating room; Sensitivity to grieving family members; good interpersonal skills; Ability to work as a team member. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Maintenance of current licensure/certifications. The employee must be able to use a laptop computer. Literacy must include operating donor information programs, access, E-mail, etc.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Ability to perform duties during scheduled shifts and to maintain mental activity after being awake for extended periods of time. Maintains an on-call schedule of prescheduled 24 hour periods of time in order to respond to organ referrals at any one of the hospitals within our service area.

The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a hospital setting (Critical care or similar units).

Salary is $92,000.00 per year, and they have great benefits.
